Rought Cut - David Leighton & Bradley Hope

This is our rough cut of our video to Misery by Maroon Five, there is about forty seconds of footage at the end still left to edit. It was shown in front of the class we have received the following comments; any negative comments will be acted on and the video will be changed accordingly for the final cut. The positive comments have also been typed down:

Positive comments-
- Interesting use of effects.
- Impressive stop motion.
- Good editing
- Overall good video, keep at it.

Negative comments -
- The lip syncing is out, a little tweaking should fix this.
- Perhaps use different angles for the lip synced parts, instead of just straight ahead.
- Some of the text intersections either linger for too long or seem unnecessary.

What will we do about it?
- We will remove the second text intersection (-No Trust-) as that has been deemed most unnecessary. Furthermore we will speed up the third text intersection (-Psychopath-).
- For the 'more camera angles for lip syncing' we will simply take a few seconds extra footage from different angles and add it into the video.
- The reason the lip syncing is out is because it was recently edited just before we uploaded it and we did not realise it was slightly out, a tiny bit of tweaking should fix this rather easily.

Recce Shot Maroon Five: Misery - Filmed & Edited By David Leighton & Bradley Hope

After watching this short stop motion clip we have learnt that using a tripod will make the transition between shots much less jerky. We will use a tripod when Stop Motion shooting from now on.

Final Song Choice - Maroon Five, Misery

After much deliberation we have decided not to choose the song 'Don't Stop' and have decided to go with a song called 'Misery' by 'Maroon Five', the reason we changed genre is we found doing something as critical as 'Don't Stop' would lead to an inevitable lack of original footage, due to this we chose a newer song which would allow us to be more creative, below is an email sent asking permission for use of the song.

Once we recieve confirmation this will also be uploaded and we hope to start our video as soon as is possible.

One Possible Song Choice - Proof Of Permission Sent

Above is proof of permission sent

The song 'Don't Stop' by 'Innerpartysystem' is one of our possible song choices so in the interest of forward planning both Bradley and myself sent permission in case we decided to use it.
As you can see here permission was sent in the form of an e-mail to Innerpartysystems Record company and Managment asking for premission to make a music video to their song 'Dont Stop' We are still to hear a reply from either of these two e-mail addresses for premission but when it is confirmed we will post the confirmation.

Analysis Of Digipack - Poster

The Used Tour Dates Poster - 2009 (Lies For The Liars Tour)

I have chosen to do my digipack of a bands (The Used) poster displaying their 'Lies For The Liars' tour. It is quite noticable that the genre of this advert is easily displayed through the use of blood and flames intertwined throughout the advert (the genre of course being rock). The use of phont displays not only the bands tour dates but also advertises that the poster is clearly about them (as 'The Used' is written in biggest lettering, and their tour date is in the second biggest lettering.) As if to doubly affirm the genre and clear up any misconceptions the audience of this digipack poster may be having the slogan 'We start screaming' has been used to portray the rock genre. The use of @ instead of 'at' could also be significant as it suggests a more youthful audience.

Analysis of Digipak - Bradley Hope

As you can see this is The CD cover for Framing Hanley's new album 'A promise to Burn' The CD cover definatly reflects The album and the songs it contains. Alot of Framing Hanley musci have meaning behind it and are usually supportive songs (for example 'weight of the world' taken from their new album A promise to Burn') or having a go at ex's or similar to that style (For example 'You stupid Girl' Taken from their new album A promise to Burn') This definatly reflects in the CD cover as we can see a Man With half his face in what seems to be a Paradise and the other side of his face seems to be in some kind of apocolypse. This could be said that this refelcts the whole Heaven and Hell aspect of life.

Analysis of Digipak - Bradley Hope

Most of The feelings music is very random and has a lot of meaning behind them. Whether they be singing helicopters and sea liners (taken from their song Helicopter from the album 'Twelve stops and Home' Or singing about politics and how solider's fight wars (taken from the song Another solider from the album 'Together we were made') all of their videos have a lot of colour and meaning behind them making them stand out form other bands. We can see The feelings colourful genre in their Cd cover of their latest album 'Together We Were Made' The bright Red represents their colour and the men walking on a black Whirlpool represents the randomness that they have in their music.

9 Frame Analysis - Panic! At The Disco - I Write Sins Not Tragedies

First Frame
This first frame shows a close up shot of a wedding book and feather quill which is obviously meant to represent the fact the theme of this video will be of a wedding, which also suggests the setting might also be at a wedding. The shot is a close up which makes it easy to see the elaborate nature of the wedding book, (does this suggest a material criticism?)

Second Frame
The second shot is then when the camera zooms out to show a medium long shot of a bride groom and vicar, this is very thematic towards a wedding and evidently shows these two are about to be betrothed. Also it is very stereotypical to what genre convention would believe a wedding to look like, with a very rustic theme; religious elements are also brought in because it looks very proper and religious as there is a priest there.

Third Frame
The third frame is then of the lead singer of the band (or at least we are led to believe this as he is singing the words) bursting in with a bunch of odd looking people completely at a binary opposite to the wedding scene and the people who were already here, the nature of them bursting in suggests chaos and disorder which again is at a binary opposite of the calm environment a person wants for their wedding. The shot is a medium long shot which I believed is used to show the diversity of the people who have burst in and that a long shot has not been used because the cameraman also wanted to keep the focus on the lead singer (this is star icon).

Fourth Frame
This is a close up (meat shot) of the lead singer and the groom. You may notice the groom has eyeliner on as does the lead singer, this suggests a theme that perhaps the two are similar. Furthermore the way the lead singer is leaning over the shoulder of the groom seems to suggest he is almost trying to tempt him; whilst the groom is leaning in a little (but keeping his eyes on the camera) suggesting that perhaps he is listening.

Fifth Frame
The fifth frame is a wide-long shot which shows the multitude of people who have burst in and disturbed the calmer atmosphere that there was before, this shot actually pans to show the complete difference from what the video looked and scene looked before and I believe this is done to reinforce the binary opposite nature of the two scenes. Furthermore this shot shows how the people who bursted in have settled down in the grooms side of the isle, suggesting that they are related to him and this sitting down also shows that they do not intend to leave.

Sixth Frame
This next frame is a blocking shot of the lead singer moving through the hustle and bustle of the (rather odd) crowd. I believe a blocking shot is used to show how busy the scene has suddenly become as everybody has started getting up and dancing, the concentration of the singers face as he moves through the crowd suggests difficulty which might show that perhaps the experience of being within this crowd is not pleasant. Furthermore we can see from the fact the singer is moving through the crowd and not dancing like the rest of them, he is different.

Seventh Frame
The theme of binary opposites is shown again by a similar shot to the second (a mid length shot of the bride and groom about to be betrothed) however it is a binary opposite as the scene is no longer calm and happy to couple are obviously arguing, the male is shouting and in the next shot the woman actually throws the flowers down and leaves. Perhaps this is done to show the discord spread by a simple interruption, or perhaps it is to be interpreted as the couple were not happy in the first place.

Frame Eight
This penultimate shot is after the bride has run out, the lead singer is shown at an over the shoulder shot (typical for conversation) talking to the groom, the serious look on the grooms face is almost somber and perhaps suggests something bad is happening. This is also a medium close up and I believe that is used to portray the depth of the grooms expression. The lead singer is also holding onto the grooms tie and almost pulling him, suggesting a dominance out of the two.

Frame Nine
This final frame shows a medium shot of the groom which pans as he dances. He is wearing the attire the lead singer had on before and the lead singer is nowhere to be seen (in fact the groom is on his own). However this change of clothing is meant to represent more than that in that perhaps the groom has become whatever the lead singer was. The fact he is alone represents isolation but the manic/happy expression he is wearing suggests a disregard for this. I believe the medium long shot was used to emphasise the clothing change but retain focus on his expression, an effect best achieved with this type of shot.

9 Frame Analysis - Bradley Hope

This 9 Frame Analysis is of the music video Misery by Maroon 5. This video has a very sexual orientation about it. Throughout the whole video there is constant sexual references. In all of Maroon 5's music there is alot of love quotes and their lyrics constantly symbolise love.

1st Frame

As we can see in this first frame it would seem that the two main characters of the video are having sex in what seems to be the middle of the road. We also see that the women is on top of the man with the man laid on the floor (sprawled rather than laid) and is not hugging or holding the girl. This would seem to suggest hat in this relationship the girl is the dominant of the two. By her being on top it shows her dominance.

2nd Frame

However this all changes in the 2nd Frame when it seems that the man is groping the womans bum. This shows an act of love making and by him Groping her he is trying to become the dominant of the two. However when looking more closely at the screen we wee that the girl is facing a fence meaning that woman is pinning the man againt the fence. Also again, shwoing that the woman is the dominant of the two.
3rd Frame

Again here we see another act of love making when the woman is biting the mans lip. However in this frame it would seem that the tides have changed and the man is now the dominant of the two as he seems to have her pinned up against a fence/wall.
4th Frame

In this scene we see that the tides have completly changed. It would seem that there is more to this what would seemed to be a ordinary couple. It now seems that either the guy has done something wrong to upset the girl in such a way that she has now kicked him in the face. Again in this screen we could say that the girl is asserting her dominace by actually kicking him in the face. Either that or she is just incredibly angry.

5th Frame

In this clip we could say that the male was trying to now run away from the female by running out into the road. However this seems to have gone wrong for the guy when he gets run over by the car. Upon closer inspection of the driver of the car it would seem that it is in fact the woman behind the wheel!

6th Frame

All of a sudden the video gets completly turned around and now they seem to be either at one of their homes or in a restraunt when the girl throws the man onto a table and mounts him. Showing yet again another act of love. This video seems to be getting more and more confusing.

7th Frame

Here we can now see that the man and woman are in the restraunts toilets. The man is getting attacked by the womand and has just had his head bashed in the door of a toilet cubicle. We can tell this by both the man's pain expression on his face and the womans anger expression on her's. Once again we can see that the woman is the more dominant of the two as he seems to be getting constantly beatben up by this woman who appears to be his girlfriend. (Well we assume her to be anyway!)

8th Frame

In this frame we see that the woman has somehow acuired an RPG and is about to fire it at the man killing him. (She must really want him dead from all this abuse she is giving him!) This shows that the woman in particular does not like this man at all. Whether this be due to him doing something wrong to her or maybe he has upset her in some way.

9th Frame

In the final frame we see that the guy has been thrown off of a building to his ultimate death. (which as we can see throughout the video was inevitable) As we can see from this video this couple definatly had a love hate relationship. What we can also take from the video is that the woamn was defiantly the more dominant of the two.

Analysis Of Advertisements

Picture From Advertisement of 'The Blackout's new album release 'The Best In Town'

This advertisement is not quite as eyecatching as my last, however it is to be found inside magazine's such as 'Kerrang' and 'NME', as a result of this is does not need to be as outrageous or eyecatching as the front cover of 'Kerrang', as it has already been bought, because it's inside a magazine the person who bought the magazine will probably look because they have spent money on it and want to see all the content. For example one would not buy a book and then not read all the pages. This album incorporates both the two leads singers 'Gavin and Sean' and the new album artwork (as a background), this then advertises both the album (and suggests you should buy it) and the bands live act (suggesting you should go see them live). The two lead singers both look like they are shouting or screaming, this reinforces the genre of the band which is 'Heavy Alternarock'. At the bottom is simply the caption 'The Best In Town, In Stores Everywhere Now!'. There is a clever use of font, as the album name is bigger than the rest of the writing (again advertising it overtly) and buy it now has an exclamation mark next to it, suggesting urgency, which perhaps makes the reader believe they have to buy this album urgently (as maybe they are running out or its that good they will all be sold soon). Also the advertisement says 'Catch Them', instead of 'See Them', live. This is suggestible because if you have to catch something it is usually rarer/better, than something you can just see/find, making it seem much more exciting. Of course there is the overt advertising of the bands name with there title 'The Blackout' in huge lettering right in the middle of the advertisement, too.

David Leighton

Analysis Of Advertisements

                                                            Picture Of Kerrang Front Cover

As we can see here this advert is evidently based towards the 'rock' genre of music listeners. This confirms that Kerrang's target audience is this genre and shows how they aim to rope in people from this genre in order to get more readers. The heading '100 GREATEST GIGS EVER!' Is very enticing, although perhaps the marketing technique of opinion disguised as fact here as the idea of a 'great gig' is subjective and opinion meaning the '100 greatest gigs' could vary depending on the person. Of course the idea is that the gigs will be good by anyone of this genre's opinion and the magazine has aimed to entice readers with this suggestion. The list of bands at the top of the page 'Linkin Park Led Zepplin Enter Shikari' is to clearly entice anybody who like these bands, I believe the aim would be to catch peoples eyes and aim to get them to buy the magazine at least for those bands, even if not for the rest of it. The main picture is of Matt Bellamy, the lead singer of 'Muse' live in concert, 'Muse' are considered an extremely good live band and won best live band '2008', this picture is used to reinforce the idea that this magazine does indeed contain the 'best' 100 gigs, in order to get people to buy it. The use of picture in picture is to help make the magazine more eyecatching. The caption 'Life Is Loud' is used to appeal to the more 'rebellious' readers, perhaps making these people more believable to the impression that they are being 'rebels'.

David Leighton

Shot Count Task - Bradley Hope

1.) Count how many shots/cuts are used in the whole video?
171 shots/cuts are used in the video Starlight by Muse.

2.) What are the main shots used in the video?

Mid body shots of the lead singer
Mid shots of the bassist
Long high angle shots of the container/oil ship
Helicopter/Birds eye view of the ship – swooping effect.

3.) Are there any creative editing techniques used in the video?

Right at the start of the video we see a shot of the ships radar system. The editor has edited this specific shot in such a way that it seems that the camera is being shaken and that the camera is losing focus and signal on the picture that is, in this case the radar system. We see this at 0.04 and 0.08 and also at 0.20 in the video. At 0.44 we see the that the editor has slowed down the shot of the drummer striking his symbol. This is both a close up shot of the symbol but also a shot that allows us to see the drummer in the background. The mixture of this specific shot and the fact that the editor has slowed down this scene allows the audience to see the symbol vibrate and move as the drummer strikes it. At around 0.56 uses fast transitions to transfer through around 4-5 different shots in under 2 seconds. We also see this again later in the video when there is a scene in which there is a variety of shots of the ships engine room and the ships engine. However, in this part of the video they get through around 15-20 shots in under 5 seconds thanks to this clever editing technique. There is also a part in the video at 3.40 where thanks again to fast transactions we get the impression that the ship is firing off a lot of flares when in fact it is only firing off one. We get this impression because of the fast transactions and the different/variety of camera angles.

4.)
Genre

The band itself has a alternative/space rock genre about them. We see in most of muse’s music videos that they are shot with a futuristic feel to them and a rather space age theme. The actual video is shot on an oil tanker. Moving away from Muse's normal theme of Sci-Fi. However it doesnt move away from the feel of the video. In most of Muse's videos they have a very weird feeling to them. Almost out of this world and very unnatural. We see this in this video as they practically a band playing on a ship in the middle of the sea. That itself is very.... weird.

Analysis Of Advertisement - Bradley Hope

Front page of NME advertising The Kings of Leon.

As we can see in this magazine advert The kings of Leon are the main concentration of the whole advert. The fact that a picture of the band takes up the majority of the page and the fact that The name of their band is in bright red across the page. We can also tell they are the main focus as the page also advertises other bands and also articles that are featured inside the magazine. But these adverts are small and to nthe edge of the page. There is also alot of them aswell.

Analysis Of Advertisements - Bradley Hope

Sojourn - Paper Company.

This advert is very clever in the fact that the advert it literally 5 words long. It uses the pun 'Space and Lots of it.' to describe and advertise a paper company. This viral advert uses a cleevr way to advertise in magazines for a paper company. By having literally having a double page spread in a magazine completely black apart from having words in the centre of the magzine is a great way to advertise paper. Paper itself is blank and therefore by having the pun 'Space and lots of it' it creates almost an inside joke.

Personal Skills Audit - By David Leighton

Skills Acquired
How did these skills contribute to the creation of your product?
How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?
Digital Technology –
What equipment/software did you use to produce your production?
The videocamera we used was a Sony Handicam, we learnt the basic filming skills with this relatively low tech piece of equipment, such as how to zoom in and out, and various camera angles such as pan, still and cantered angles, most of which we used within our filming.
Software used in pre production was minimal, however whenever we saved a certain piece of filming or if it needed editing before the film was finished we used ITunes Movie maker. Also garage band was incorporated to some extent.
These skills helped in the creation of our product because it meant we had a more professional looking product which attained us a higher grade. The in depth knowledge of these skills also helped make the creation of the product easier and less stressful.
I aim to develop these skills (especially with the camera) as we will be using a more technical advanced filming camera so as well as using and incorporating the skills I have already acquired I intend to use other skills of which I aim to develop during the course of my A2 production, such as focusing and blurring.
Post Production –
What software did you use to create your production?
Discuss specific features of the software.
For the post production stage of we mainly used final cut, and developed such skills as splicing, parallel editing, colour imposing and various other skills which we could also apply to Adobe Photoshop, and to this we then added the skills of crop, dodge, blur, smudge and burn from Photoshop to help bring together our finished product.
These skills (as above) helped to contribute to the creation of our product because it made the whole creation aspect a lot smoother, making our ideas come to life in a more realistic way. Also because we ran a ‘tight ship’ and had all the editing done for (or before where possible) the deadlines set it meant we had spare time to go over any mistakes or add in extras (like the phone call at the end of our production).
I intend to develop the skills I have learnt with these programmes by incorporating them into my A2 product, I then intend to add other skills from this program into my product. Hopefully I will be able to use garage band a lot more also to develop my skills.
Research & Planning –
What tasks did you complete when preparing to film your sequence?
How did your planning help the smooth progression of your film?
Whilst researching I acquired the skills of being able to trawl through a lot of data, and also how to pinpoint genres within a film or trailer almost immediately.
This contributed to the production of our product because it meant I had a wider base of research in which I could use to make our film more accurate towards our genre, eventually gaining us a higher overall grade.
I intend to develop these skills through repetition of use, and furthering my research to not only cover one genre, but an entire host of genres, which will make picking a suitable genre to suit my style of production easier.
Using conventions of real media texts –
What texts did you analyse?
Did you take any inspiration from the genre conventions you found within your research?
We analysed various aspects of ‘Film Noir Conventions’ researching films such as ‘La Noir’, and then we also added some of our own creative input by researching both Neo Noir films (Spirit, Sin City) and action/thriller style films (Taken, Se7en) and the style of the band ‘My Chemical Romance’ in there ‘Danger Days’ Tour (which we believed to be quite representative of a sort of Postmodern-Neo Noir). We found that inspiration for our product was within all three of these aspects so we decided to combine them all that we hoped created a classic neo noir and classic noir mix.
These skills and analyses made helped us to focus our filming style and conventions towards exactly what we wanted. Making it easier for both pre and post production stages to be executed smoothly and to the effect that we desired.
During our A2 project I aim to develop these analytical skills simply by researching a wider field, at a deeper depth. Making these skills much more honed and eventually (hopefully) helping to achieve a good grade.
Creativity –
Were your ideas for your portfolio imaginative and unique or did you adhere to your genre conventions?
I believe our ideas were quite imaginative in some ways, and yet faithful to the conventions we aimed to reproduce at the same time. The reason for this is because we took several conventions from Noir & Neo Noir and combined them with the style of our choosing (The Danger Days period of My Chemical Romance). Making it both similar and different to our conventions (something I believe was quite inventive).
This helped contribute towards our product because our originality yet faithfulness to the genre helped to gain me a high enough grade in my coursework to attain an A.
I intend to develop these skills and further my originality by not only continuing this throughout my A2 project but hopefully widening my independence into creating exactly what I want for my music video.

Personal Skills Audit - Bradley Hope

Digital Technology - What equipment/software did you use the produce your production?
Skills Acquired.

when shooting the film we used things such as digital cam corders to record the video. We would record separate clips so when it came to the post production and the editing of the film it would make it much easier to edit. This is instead of leaving the camera on record constantly which would leave us with one massive clip.

How did these skills contribute to the creation of your product?

The skills contributed to the creation of the final video as it all came together in the end to create the final product. For example, if I didn't know how to use the camera then a lot of shots would have a finger of the lens making the video pretty pointless and well, rubbish.

How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?

The skills I have acquired in AS will be transffered over into A2 in the production of my music video. I will then expand on these skills and strengthen them by using new means of editing and production when making my music video. I will also acquire new skills throughout the year and also use these in the production of my music video.

Post Production - What software did you use to create your production?

Skills Acquired.

In the AS year when we were producing videos we used the Final cut software to edit and change our videos and get them to the final stages of which it can be uploaded. We also used software such as Photoshop to edit any images thatw would go into any of my videos. I attained alot of skills through using these software packages and now can edit a video easliy and with haste, knowing what i am doing. When using Final Cut i learnt skills such as Burning, Cropping, Trimming, Editing of background, Adding clips to another to make one clip, using the razor tool etc.

I will develop these skills by expanding on them and using the software alot more so i become familiar with it and become more confident in using it while not making as many mistakes or errors.

Research and Planning - What Tasks did you complete when preparing to film your sequence? How did your planning help the smooth progression of your film?

Skills Acquired.

Throughout the AS year, me and my group would try to get all the tasks done before the making of the film so that none of the paperwork would ditract us and take us away from the making of our film. By doing this it meant we could focuus entirely on our film and get that to look really good. Of course we took alot of time and consideration to make sure that all the paperwork was good and right as well before submitting it. We made sure it was right by having our teacher look at the paperwork every so often to make sure it was right and on the right track.

How did these skills contribute to the creation of your product?

As said before we would try to get all the tasks done before the making of the film so that none of the paperwork would ditract us and take us away from the making of our film. I suppose this isnt really a skill but it meant thatw e had everything organised and we knew what we were doing and when we were doing it.

How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?

Simply we will do the exact same. If we can get work done to a standard of which it is good material and is right on the day of which it is given to use then we are getting work done and allowing us to move on to the next lot of work given to us, Again i suppose allowing us to focus on our video.

Using Conventions of real media texts - Which texts did you analyse? Did you take any inpiration from the conventions found from the research?

Skills Acquired.

Alot of the time me and my group would look at various videos of the same genre (of which we would be making our video to) so that we could get an idea of how they filmed and made the video. It also gave us some ideas on stories for our video and allowed us in a way to broaden our horizons.

How did these skills contribute to the creation of your product?

It allowed us as said before to ' get an idea of how they filmed and made the video. It also gave us some ideas on stories for our video.' By doing this we would have alot of ideas and could easily have an idea on what to base our video on.

How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?

I think in the A2 year we will do the same and watch alot of videos that have alot of relevance and are of the same genre of the video we wish to vreate, So in this case we would watch videos and bands of a similar genre to see how they film their music videos and what stories (if they do) base it on.

Creativity - Were our ideas for your portfolio imaginative and unique or did youo adhere to conentions?

Skills Acquired.

Looking back at the videos we produced at an AS level I would say that we were very imaginative. Yes, we would use some of the reaserch for some features for our video but alot of the time our material was constantly thought up and imaginative. By doing it this way we would be using our own material that no one else has used and will therefore be new and interesting. This of course would have its disadvantages as our materials may not be good enough.

How did these skills contribute to the creation of your product?

As said before by being 'Creative' we would 'be using our own material that no one else has used and will therefore be new and interesting.' Obviously we would have to keep the genre of our videos in sync with the task in hand that we were given. But all of the scripts, props, ideas and such were all our ideas that we thought up.

How will you develop these skills during the A2 project?

We will continue to be imaginative and use our own material. Especially now that we are creating music videos as that is what alot of artists like to do in their videos. Be new and creative with their videos. I belive by doing it this way it will give us a good advanatage and will allow the flow of lots of good ideas that can added or taken away from the video.
